Living in the shadows

Mumbai, India, 2019

On the streets of Mumbai, over 40% of the population lives in slums and nearly 60% in extreme poverty. This photograph takes us into the heart of this reality, showing the extent of these precarious conditions. Built with anything that can be found to make a shelter - wood, advertising panels, canvas, plastic - these dwellings are often stacked on top of each other, with one or two families living in a single room and sleeping on the floor.

Without running water or indoor facilities, daily life takes place in the street, where an old paint bucket serves as a stove and a single pot is used for cooking. Children, often unaware of the conditions in which they were born, run and play on the sidewalks, unaware of the dangers of the street and the cars passing by just a few steps away.
